Year 9 students took part in the Springboard to GCSE Maths Day. The purpose of the event was to promote the new maths GCSE as well as to inspire the students.
Firstly, students were posed with the question, “When am I ever going to need this?” This session was designed to get students thinking about how different professions use different elements of maths. For the second session the students took part in a relay of maths activities to enhance their team work and problem solving skills. The final session was designed specifically for problem solving. The new GCSE places a large emphasis on problem solving and the hope is that students will now feel more confident and can approach these types of questions with a clear and logical method. Students had to find out how many meatballs would fit into a pan without it overflowing!
