Melike Uzum, Jemima Dodwell-Cooke and Issy Barker, travelled to Manchester Metropolitan University to compete in the North West Regional Final of the Routes into Languages Spelling Bee 2015.
Due to the sheer number of students taking part in the competition from schools right across the North West, all competitors were divided into groups of around 30 students upon arrival for the first round, to determine the top four spellers that would then move on to the second round to compete for a place in the national final.
During this first round, contestants had one minute to accurately say and spell out as many French or Spanish words as they could in target language and from memory.
Not only did the Year Seven trio have to learn 150 words in preparation for the competition, but they each had to compete in front of a panel of native speaker judges and verifiers in a university lecture theatre full of spectators! This was a daunting prospect for all contestants, but they rose to the challenge and performed extremely well, impressing the judges and their audience!
