Jane and Peter triumph on finals day

Dazzling sunshine, a sharp shower and a beautiful rainbow accompanied Tarvin Tennis Club’s Finals Day event in early September. After a few months of preliminary rounds the finalists met to do battle and friends, family and supporters were treated to the usual competitive mix of brilliant Murray-like returns and – ouch – don’t need Hawkeye for that one!
With a short break between matches play lasted for nearly five hours, which tested the stamina of all players but especially that of Jane Wilson, who had won her way into all three of her events. That she was successful in the first two, the Ladies’ Singles and Ladies’ Doubles was cause for celebration, though the Mixed Doubles became a bridge too far. Jane becomes the Ladies’ Singles champion for the first time and was ably assisted by her partner Catherine Mason in winning the Doubles.
Peter Nosworthy continued his domination of the Men’s Singles, winning his 9th consecutive singles title and 13th in all, overcoming spirited resistance from Daniel Sherwin who was hampered by injury from early in the second set. Graham Freeman and Keith Barker triumphed in a close three-setter in the Men’s Doubles. This was hard-hitting Graham’s first title but Keith’s 10th since his first in 1987.
Graham Bunting displayed his usual speed about court and ability to intercept almost anything flying over the net in retaining his Mixed Doubles title, this time with a new partner, Sarah Mitchell, whose steady drives kept their game on course.
Altogether a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon’s tennis and thanks must go to all who contributed in any way – players, umpires, line judges, refreshment providers, tea makers, washers-up and loyal supporters, especially those who lasted until after half past six!”
